Beyond The Visible

Academic Project (2024, Royal College of Art)

ARTIST NOTE

Beyond the Visible (2024) is an experimental catalog that explores the interaction between light and space beyond what is seen, and it is a work that deals with the materiality of my visual language, projection. This work explores the tension between the front and the back which are revealed by projecting light on the cube’s facade and is hidden in the shadow, and visually shows how light dominates and transforms space. This catalog explores hidden dimensions beyond just visible dimensions, providing an opportunity for the reader to newly recognize the invisible part of space.

The catalog revolves around the dichotomous relationship between the visible space created by light and the invisible space formed by the shadow. The surface transforms into a dynamic canvas when light is projected onto the facade of the cube, but the shadow and dark space behind it exist in a closely connected interaction with the light in the front, not just a secondary element. This dichotomous opposition structure does not work as a fixed binary concept, but rather as a complementary and reinforcing relationship, it makes space experience in multiple layers. In particular, this catalog involves converting light changes occurring in three-dimensional space back into a two-dimensional form. The visual images of the cube are decomposed and reconstructed into photographs, recording the interaction between light and space as planar images. This allows the reader to experience the complex dimensions and depths that light creates from a two-dimensional perspective anew.

This catalog reinterprets the interaction of light and space based on Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of multiplicity. Multiplicity refers to constantly changing and interconnected relationships, not fixed centers. In this catalog, light and shadows, as well as what is revealed and hidden, are not opposed, but reconstruct space in interdependent relationships. These multiple relationships reflect a rhizomatic structure, making the reader newly aware of space. This catalog explores how light and space interact and transform through a medium called projection that goes beyond what ultimately seems. Therefore, it leads the reader to have a new perspective on space, allowing them to imagine an invisible space beyond just a visual experience.
